All About Four Season Gardening

November 2000 -- Everyone knows that spring and summer mean bright, beautiful blooms and colorful gardens. But just because the weather is turning cooler doesn’t mean gardeners in the Western part of the country must settle for drab landscapes. With just a bit of planning, gardeners can plant a garden that provides visual interest throughout the fall and winter. Many of the plants in the Sunset Best of the West Collection offer deep, rich colors and do well in the cooler months.
Monrovia, one of the world’s leading growers of container plants, established the Sunset Best of the West Collection of plants to celebrate the splendor of the Western gardens. The plants were chosen because they are easy to maintain, look great year-round and enhance the outdoor lifestyle. Chosen by Monrovia and the editors of Sunset Magazine, the plants in the collection reflect the wide range of climate zones in the 14 Western states and flourish in these diverse climates.
To make it easy for gardeners, colorful flyers with planting ideas for fall and winter are available in fine garden centers throughout the west. To create a stunning landscape for the fall season, look for the Blazing Fall Foliage Border schematic. Plants such as Purple Coneflower, Autumn Joy Stonecrop, Purple Fountain Grass, Pink Dawn Viburnum, Autumn Gold Maidenhair Tree and Palace Purple Coral Bells give this border rich autumn colors and contrasting textures. Many of these plants will offer food and rest for migrating birds.
If a holiday garden is the goal, look for the Berries Jubilee winter planting plan. This border includes Blue Spruce, Berries Jubilee Holly, Cranberry Cotoneaster, and Yuletide Camellia; names that bring to mind images of cooler winter weather and the holiday spirit. Many of these winter hardy plants can be used to “deck the halls” or embellish indoor wreaths and garlands.
If space is at a premium, both plans offer advice for adapting the theme to fall or winter potted arrangement. The Fiery Foliage pot includes Pink Splendor Mirror Plant, Bronze New Zealand Flax, Palace Purple Coral Bells, and Dwarf Pomegranate. The Winter Lace Pot displays Gold Coast Juniper, Sizzling Pink Fringe Flower, and Firepower Heavenly Bamboo. Both container plants are a great way to add exciting color to a porch or balcony during cool weather months.
