High-Bred In a way, plants are like people — they too have circulatory systems and need to absorb nutrients in order to thrive. Just as people who are in good health tend to be resistant to illness, plants that start out healthy are much more able to fight disease. Healthy Monrovia plants will look lush in the garden center and be more likely to flourish in your garden. Every day since 1926, we have continued to improve our research and propagation techniques, as well as our methods for plant selection – enabling us to grow superior plants with stronger root systems and greater resistance to pests and disease. We adhere to our Healthy Start Philosophy: Start with the best stock to end with the best plant. Genetically superior specimens that exceed the industry norm are resourced from all over the world for better appearance, longevity, hardiness, pest resistance, and easy care. Well-Fed A critical component of the growing process is the soil. Plants grown in nutrient-rich soils are healthier, with stronger root systems. Monrovia is the only grower of premium ornamentals in the world that custom blends 42 different soil mixes, including compost and native soils. Seven different types of mycorrhizae are added to our soil mix to create an environment that dramatically increases the life of our plants. Mycorrhizae is a beneficial fungus that develops in and around a plant’s roots, stimulating its nutrient and water uptake, increasing fruit and flower yield, and reducing transplant shock and other environmental stresses. Once you begin adding Monrovia plants to your garden, the mycorrhizae in our soil will begin to spread, benefiting your garden’s ecosystem. You’ll see for yourself that quality soil ensures that plants flourish, making them far more resistant to pests and disease. Loving-Care All Monrovia plants are nurtured and cared for by hand by our highly- skilled and specially- trained Horticultural Craftsmen. Plants are pruned several times at all stages of maturity to ensure each plant grows to the specified fullness or “spread” that Monrovia plants are known for. Every element of a plant’s upbringing is scrutinized – from propagation and canning to watering, fertilizing, and pruning. Each plant must be disease- free, have a healthy root system, and meet Monrovia’s high quality standards for size, foliage, color, and number of blooms, or it will not be approved for shipment.
