Home About Monrovia Our Values
Monrovia is committed to enhancing the beauty and value of the North American landscape - one garden at a time. By producing the strongest plants in the industry, we offer you peace of mind and the quality assurance that stands behind each and every Monrovia plant.

We believe that what helps make a landscape beautiful is the protection and preservation of the environment. At Monrovia we are proud to grow plants responsibly and we have established numerous initiatives to sustain the environment – from recycling irrigation water and organic waste, to reducing the use of pesticides, and converting field vehicles from gasoline to propane. Some initiatives that we're proud of include:

Video: The Environment
• Environmental Pioneer – Monrovia leads the way in the use of beneficial insects, natural bacteria, and organic mulches to help reduce pesticide use.

• The EPA Evergreen Award – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded us the prestigious EPA Evergreen Award, which recognizes outstanding pollution prevention efforts.

• Water Management
– Monrovia recycles over 90% of its irrigation water at its five growing locations, saving over 2.5 billion gallons per year.

– Irrigation automation is another management tool used to conserve water. Hundreds of irrigation valves are wired to a central computer where site managers can monitor and choose the most effective means of irrigating plants.

• Recycling
– Monrovia reduces the volume sent to landfills by recycling old plant stakes, soil media, and prunings into organic compost.

– Monrovia is a proud sponsor of the Missouri Botanical Garden's Pots to Planks initiative, a program that turns recycled garden containers into usable landscape lumber. In 2005, the program kept more than 60,000 pounds of plastic garden containers from entering the waste stream.

• Greener Solutions
– Our Plant Health Team hand weeds each of our 22 million plants at our five growing locations as an alternative to using harmful chemicals.

– In the early 1990s, Monrovia switched to a system using slow release fertilizer incorporated in the soil. This allowed a 75% reduction in the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied through the irrigation water.

– Monrovia carefully tracks the nutritional status of our plants to avoid over-application of fertilizers, which is wasteful and is a threat to the environment. Soil is continuously tested throughout the growing season and the amount of fertilizer applied through the irrigation system is adjusted accordingly. By carefully monitoring fertility levels, we have been able to cut the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied through the irrigation water by about half.

• Energy efficiency – Most nursery vehicles have been converted to propane to reduce emissions and our newly constructed greenhouses are state-of-the-art and energy efficient.

• Invasive species – Invasive plant species have been identified as a major threat causing habitat loss in the environment. Several plants have been eliminated from our product line because of their invasive habit and our new plant introductions undergo extensive trialing and evaluation, including testing for immediate and potential invasiveness.
